About
Lasermark...
Lasermark was
established in June 1998, starting life in Woodcraft Workshop
in Middleton-on-Sea, West Sussex, originally trading as
Lasermark Framing. The proprietor David Samuels started
the business, bringing with him 15 years of experience
in the picture framing industry. He first became involved
in picture framing in South Africa in 1984, managing a
large framing workshop in Johannesburg. On his return
to England in 1986, he set up and ran a commercial framing
workshop for Christies Contemporary Art in London, carrying
out framing for their main gallery in Piccadilly and their
regional retail outlets, for the catalogue print business.
In 1989, he bought an existing framing business in Godstone,
Surrey, which he developed and ran for eight and a half
years as the sole proprietor, before selling it on.
For the beginnings of Lasermark,
the original premises was antiquated though effective,
with a wood burning stove for warmth in the winter, and
oak beams throughout. The roof space was converted to
accommodate a laser engraving machine, to enable the business
to offer an additional facet and produce laser engraved
photo frames.
The business developed and grew through various promotions,
recommendations and contacts in the art world, supplying
a number of galleries and artists in and around London.
A niche market was also developed in the cruising business,
supplying photo frames to the P&O cruise liners, Arcadia,
Aurora, Oriana and Victoria, the frames being laser engraved
with the P&O logo and ship’s name. In addition,
a range of laser engraved frames was sold through local
gift shops.
As the business grew, a bigger workshop was needed and
in 2001 the company moved into a modern industrial unit
on Ford Lane Business Park, in Ford, near Arundel, where
access and parking were made easier. The framing side
of the business is always changing and expanding, with
framing being produced for such customers as Body Shop,
Orient Express, Fat Face, Coca Cola, Arun District Council,
W.S.C.C., Paul Smith Clothing and many other corporate
clients.
The engraving side of the business has grown steadily,
with a variety of non metallic products being branded
and customised for various applications. In addition to
engraved photo frames, a wide range of different products
has been through the hands of Bridget Samuels, the principle
engraver. Shop fittings for Fat Face and wooden trophies
for their sponsored events; glass engraving for the World
Real Tennis Championships; the marking of wood products
for West’s of East Dean; wine glasses for Vinopolis;
as well as many individual items for special occasions
- including a personal dedication on a coffin, now well
and truly buried!
